Vienna is the capital of music. In the period of “Viennese Classicism” alone, Vienna was home to some of the greatest musical geniuses of all times, such as Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven – 2020 will be dedicated to commemorating this world-famous composer who lived in Vienna for a large part of his life.
In addition, Vienna is also the capital of dance and balls. The Blue Danube Waltz and the dance music composed by the Strauss family are regular features of concert programmes all over the world and are enjoyed by millions of people who greet the new year by watching the annual New Year’s Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
“Everybody waltz!” is also the motto of Vienna’s legendary annual Opera Ball. Apart from this ball, which has become a cultural “institution” drawing widespread international attention, 400 other balls lure more than 500,000 guests to Vienna’s ballrooms each year.
With the Viennese Balls abroad, the City of Vienna wants to share this positive and unifying Viennese tradition with countries all around the world to promote friendly relations across borders.
The Viennese Ball in Stockholm is a special salute from the City of Vienna to a vibrant city of culture we entertain close friendly relations with. I wish the organisers of the ball every success and I hope the guests will enjoy an unforgettable evening dancing to the music of Viennese Waltz!
